Matt Cutts - Website's Expired Products

What should sites do with pages for products that are no longer available
Most of the clients I have (and had) offer services, so they usually have a couple of pages where their individual services details are placed. Most of these clients maintain their services and just few months ago one of them doesn't offer a certain package anymore, and since I never experienced this kind of problem I think hard for it.

As a SEO specialist, it's my responsibility to think about any possibilities of taking advantage of this page and if removing and redirecting it to a 404 will not cause me any damage.

The package that they no longer want to offer have been around for years, so most likely it already have page rank, it may already have ranked for a long time. They're not an e-commerce site by the way, they're a company offering services and have different packages for their services.

Like for example, they're offering SEO services, Web Design and Development, Social Media Management service, Pay Per Click, etc. They don't have a product but a package for each services.

So what did I do? I left it live, highlight the expiration date and have the "RELATED PRODUCTS" in the page to refer them other similar packages for the website visitors in case they landed on that page.

Did I make the right decision? Let's check out this video of Matt Cutts where Blind Five Year Old from San Francisco California asks:
How would Google recommend handling eCommerce products that are no longer available? (Does this change as the number of discontinued products outnumbers the active products?)

I think my decision was right, right? I don't want to redirect it on a 404 since the client said that they may renew the package any time in the future. To keep the page's authority on other ranked pages, I decided to keep it and at the same time suggest other services that the visitor may like.

Google Analytics Platform Principles - Mission Complete

Google Analytics Platform Principles
Few weeks ago I've posted a video about "Getting Started with Google Analytics". I've actually noticed that video since I was studying and taking the course for the Digital Analytics Fundamentals which I was not able to get a certificate, but then I passed the final assessment and finished the whole course. Then again, the certificate of completion is not available anymore so no certificate for me!

But I was taking the course because Google Analytics (GA) emailed me that they have an upcoming new FREE course, which is the Google Analytics Platform Principles. In their email, it says it's advisable to finish the first course first - which was a great tip.

I actually got the alert on March 12 about the course going live, but started it about 2 days later since I was still finishing the first course. Luckily, the new course is short, direct and still useful for SEO specialists like me and was able to finish the new course within 24 hours.

Google Analytics Platform Principles

Again, the course is short, direct and simple but then again I will also advise to take the first course. The first course is longer but if you have been using Google Analytics for a long time and didn't take this course yet, there are things you'll learn more about GA.

The course certificate (is I think) open until March 27, so hurry and enroll, study and take the assessments and get the certificate right after you take the final assessment. Here's my certificate:

I got the certificate right away, it's nothing special, it's just a completion certificate - completion of the course that is. I'm also checking out the other free courses, maybe there's something that could benefit me our at least could make use of in boosting my career and knowledge in this field.

My Resume - New Web Design and the Infographic Version

SEO Specialist Resume
March 12, 2014 - The 25th birthday of the Internet I launched the new design for the website since the previous look is just temporary and too girly (which is not me).

I decided to change the website once I found the right FREE theme online, thanks to templateism.com where I got the theme which I believe the template is designed by Syed Faizan Ali. The colorful design really attracted me and think that the design is great for me.

I'm very much happy with the new design, Syed make it a lot easier for me to update my website (the resume area) compared to the previous design. I can easily spot the area where I need to update and locate where I could place it since the area are just widgets.

The New Website Design

I made a couple of changes on the theme, customize it and personalize the design to make the design also speak out who I am.

Browsing the information that you might need for me is pretty easy to access, it's actually more like my online resume that anyone could check out and see if I'm fit for a job. I think all my social media profiles are showed and connected to the site plus an interactive sidebar for the popular posts - hover your mouse on the sidebar's popular post's image.

There are still something wrong with the sidebar design since the original design doesn't have one and I need it. So that's why there are only 2 type of contents there. I'm still working on some errors, hopefully soon. So if you encounter some errors in the future, please do feel free to let me know.

Lastly, CHAT WITH ME easily through Skype by just clicking on the SKYPE BUTTON on the top side. It will launch the Skype software and open a window where we could chat - hopefully I'm online.

My Infographic Resume

I'm fully aware that a lot of you might need a downloadable and printable version so I made an INFOGRAPHIC version of my resume - no more doc or PDF file. I decided to level up everything, I might make a video version too.

Check out the infographic (I tried my best to make it look like an infographic) version of my resume, actually it is the infographic of my website that does not include my blog but include the details you need about me to help you decide if I'm the best person to hire or not.

The one displayed above may not look like a good quality since it's just uploaded here and they seem to lower the quality of the photo. So if you want to download and have the readable one, make sure to use the link above where you will be able to get it from Google Drive.

I'll try my best to update the post once I have anything to update my resume, so the infographic above will be updated too if it's needed.

Getting Started with Google Analytics

Getting Started with Google Analytics
Just few days ago, I got an email from Google Analytics (GA) about their upcoming course which they call the Google Analytics Platform Principles. To be honest, I am not even aware that before this course there was a course already existed called the Digital Analytics Fundamentals. SEO for 3 years and I was not aware of this, but I was totally aware that there's a GA certification but was not aware of this free course that anyone can take.

I'm one of the subscriber of GA on YouTube and today I found this video on their channel about "Getting Started with Google Analytics (Webinar)" that I think will be worth it to share to everyone and anyone who's reading this blog.

Why watch this 47 minutes and 56 seconds video?

If you have a website or plan to take the road as a SEO specialist, I think this video will help you understand the importance in tracking your website traffic, the activities of your website visitors and of course monitor your conversions.

Even if you're a business owner, or a website owner, you could totally understand this video. I think that's their aim but then, this webinar was way back in 2012 and they've already made a couple of changes on the UI (User Interface - what the user sees), but at least you'll be able to understand what GA's all about and how we use them.

If you can't understand the terms, or find it hard to watch this video, I suggest you go and check out the Digital Analytics Fundamentals course of the Google Analytics Academy - which is totally free. But then the certifcates is not available anymore due to the upcoming new course they're having.

I'm almost done with the Digital Analytics Fundamentals course, and I've learned a lot more than what I already know and understand the flow, the terms, and almost everything on GA's result. I'm just simply preparing myself for the new course, so I don't have to Google the other terms they'll be using.

So here's the video I'm taking about, it's a bit long but worth to watch.

SEO vs Link Builder – Who to Hire?

SEO vs Link Builder Who to Hire
I’ve been getting job offers this past few days and I’ve rejected quite a number of them since I don’t think I’m fit for the job or I don’t like something that they want. So in this article, I would like to at least express why you should hire a SEO and a link builder for a job and discuss some areas that could help you decide which one to hire.

Link Builder

The title actually speaks itself, they simply build links. If you have a SEO plan ready, the type of links you wish to build to your client’s website(s), the number of links, your own strategy then it’s best to hire a link builder.

Link Builders are way cheaper compared to hiring a SEO, it’s simply because they’ll be taking care only the link building, not the website analysis, not creating a SEO plan, not creating a strategy to boost the ranking of the website.

The salary of a link builder will depend on the tasks, the website that you want them to handle. The more links of course, the more work. The more work, the higher pay they need. Most of the link builders I know are open on the price per link built, so they could be a lot cheaper.

SEO Specialist

SEO specialists like me has a bigger job scope. We don’t only take care of link building, but we also take care on onsite optimization, making your website not only search engine friendly but user friendly as well. That’s why if the site doesn’t convert, you can complain to the SEO specialist or the web designer – since there’s a flaw to the design or there’s no targeted traffic at all.

One of my problem on working for an agency, or an agency offering me a job is that they already have a SEO plan, and sadly some of the SEO plans they've prepared have a mix of a black hat or could create a footprint and could totally damage their client's website, that's why I rejected a couple of offers - I was just simply uncomfortable with the plan that they have.

I've tried to accept one once, the company owner don't want to listen to my suggestions and I end up resigning in a month. The company owner contacted me later on, a few months and found out that there are websites that have been affected due to the updates and would like to hire me back to fix it - and I rejected the offer.

This is why SEO specialists are a bit expensive than the link builders, because you’re not only paying them for the links they've built but also their knowledge, skills and tasks done to make your website gain more traffic, make more conversions and increase your sales - and that's why they could offer SEO services because they're more fully equipped compared to a link builder.

It’s best to hire a SEO specialist when you don’t know what SEO is, how to achieve ranking, have no time to study and learn SEO, or prefer someone who specialize or an expert to this job do it.

So all in all, if you have a plan, if you’re a SEO company, or just want to outsource the link building tasks then hire a link builder, have the service cheaper and the best thing is there are a lot of people who offer these services already so you have a lot of choice out there.

Then again, if you own a website and want it to rank to gain traffic and make sales, then hire a SEO specialist. Don’t have an experiment on your website, it may not only hurt your website but also your business name.

Here are a few of my previous and some current clients that I've done SEO service with. Not all are published.
